WHOPPER WETA WALK

Come and meet one of NZ's largest prehistoric insects, the Mahoenui giant weta. Unchanged in over 100 million years, these fascinating creatures were rediscovered in 1962 and live in a reserve closed to the general public. This is a unique opportunity to photograph this special King Country icon in its home environment.

PUREORA TIMBER TRAIL WALK

Enjoy this spectacular bushwalk through a pristine piece of native podocarp forest. The Pikiariki ecological area has been the subject of intensive pest control, which is evident in the variety of birds and lush bush that may be seen along the trail. The walk will follow the newly created cycle trail from Pureora village and weave up Pureora mountain to enjoy great views of the surroundings.

CAVE KIDS FAMILY SUPPORT OPTION - 2 TRIPS

Walk along the Opapaka Pa track site through native forest, then onto a steep track to the pa site (a battle took place there in the 1700s), where defence structures and kumara pits are still evident. NATHAN'S POINT

This Kawhia south circuit takes in Lake Taharoa and bird life there. Further north, a walk along the ridge line leading to Nathan's Point offers spectacular views over the harbour and passes ancient pa sites. Hear about the pre-European history and early trading activity. We skirt the inner harbour on our return.

ONGARUE REVISITED

Since we last visited the historic Ongarue tramway the Mangatukutuku viaduct has now been abridged, and the spiral restoration is well underway. Whether this is the first time or a repeat trip for you, challenge yourself to cross the new 90m suspension bridge, and inspect the spiral as it has not been seen since its closure.

KOKAKO - THE DAWN CHORUS

Be captivated by the dawn chorus featuring an ancient resident; the kokako. The song of the kokako is one you will never forget. A dark bluish-grey bird with a long tail and short wings, it has a pair of brightly coloured, fleshy "wattles" extending from either side of its gape to meet below the neck. Catch glimpses of this beautiful endangered bird and learn about protection of the kokako in the beautiful Waipapa ecological reserve.

MANGAOTAKI HOBBIT HIDEAWAY

While not the site selected for filming scenes for the Hobbit movie, this hidden valley of limestone formations on the next door property could be a spot where Hobbits chose to live. The short walk uphill follows the limestone cliffs and once on top views include the Mangaotaki Valley and beyond. In the early 1900's wool from Puketiti Station and surrounding farms was taken to Te Kuiti via the Mangaotaki Pack Track. This has now been reopened and we will follow it back to the road.

HELIHIKE / HELIBIKE IN THE PUREORA FOREST PARK

A new mountain-biking challenge in Pureora this year, and an option to include heli-hikers, this day is tailor-made for adrenaline junkies. The helicopter will drop you at a specified hilltop location, and you will make your way back to the rendezvous point for a bbq and cold drink. Be sure to bring your lunch and snacks for along the way. The mountain-biking trip will be tough, and recommended for experienced mountain-bikers only. The hike will not be as tough, but a good level of fitness is recommended.

Situated close to the Tawarau Forest on the Te Anga Road, the day includes two walks. The first will be around and through an area of mixed podocarp forest that has been under QEII covenant for more than 15 years. Following lunch the walk will take us across the road and uphill to two magnificent mahoe trees that have been acclaimed by some conservationists as the largest they have ever seen.

Kawhia Traditional Maori Kai Festival

Developed to coincide with Waitangi Day celebrations in the first weekend in February, the unique festival on the beautiful Kawhia foreshore showcases:
